Born and raised in the Philippines, Alistair Gammad has had a life-long passion for helping others.
It was this passion, along with a drive to experience different ways of life, that led him to move to Canberra in 2018.
Now completing his Masters of Medical Imaging - his second degree at the 海角射区 (UC) - he says he鈥檚 fallen completely in love with life in Australia鈥檚 capital city.
We spoke to Alistair to find out more about his journey so far.
鈥淚 have always dreamed of having a profession that serves others,鈥 says Alistair.
鈥淏efore Australia, I applied to the military academy and veterinary school, so I have always chosen paths that would enable me to render service to others.鈥
After studying veterinary medicine in the Philippines, he moved to Canberra to complete a Bachelor of Health Science at UC. Graduating early in the pandemic made finding employment challenging, so he took the time to step back and re-assess his options for furthering his career.
鈥淚 was blessed to be given an opportunity to choose which avenue I can take, and the Master of Medical Imaging captured my interest and is now my focus in becoming a more improved professional.鈥
Alistair says his desire to experience life abroad came from his father.
鈥淢y father has always convinced me to take opportunities in living and experiencing life in different lands, as it helps you to improve your flexibility and provides a greater perspective on life,鈥 he shares
鈥淎lso, it gives you an opportunity to have a blank canvas in your life,鈥 he adds. He says this means you can start fresh and create a life that鈥檚 exactly what you want it to be.
鈥淚 moved to Canberra in 2018 and fell in love with the state and what it has to offer. I have never left since.鈥
When it comes to starting over, Alistair says it鈥檚 not unusual to feel lost or anxious in a new place at first. He admits he found it challenging at times, especially dealing with a totally different culture and lifestyle.
鈥淏ut,鈥 he adds, 鈥渁s you go along, you will be surprised how it will remind you of home and how you can create a new version of home in Canberra.鈥
He says feeling awkward is natural, but taking the initiative to get involved will help you quickly become part of the welcoming Canberra community. And there鈥檚 always help on hand if you need it.
鈥淭here are various services available at UC to accommodate your needs,鈥 Alistair says.
鈥淚n my experience, the most basic services found at Student Central have been the most beneficial,鈥 he adds. 鈥淚t becomes a distinct location that you can go for help or clarification on certain queries or interests that you may have, whether it be about course progression, financial assistance, wellbeing, medical and counselling and much more.鈥
鈥淭he university has such good scenery, too. What鈥檚 not to like!鈥
Although his course is challenging, Alistair says he finds his studies to be fulfilling.
鈥淲e get to learn the different concepts of medical radiation science and are able to witness these concepts in practice,鈥 he says.
鈥淚 get to witness how my knowledge and actions can directly affect the results produced, which will affect one鈥檚 wellbeing in terms of diagnostics.鈥
He says getting the chance to start with a blank canvas and striving to better himself every day are the two things he loves the most about being an international student in Canberra.
鈥淐anberra offers a fresh start at any point in time to rediscover yourself or improve on what you have,鈥 he explains.
鈥淲ith the diverse array of cultures and perspectives here in the nation鈥檚 capital, you can confidently say Canberra will always make you the best version of yourself.鈥
As he looks to his future, Alistair says he鈥檚 excited to dedicate himself to helping others in his healthcare career and for a whole new fresh start. He adds that the skills he鈥檚 gained at UC will support him along the way.
鈥淚 will be able to bring my on-the-go initiative, courage, welcoming nature and the thriving mentality UC has taught me,鈥 he explains. 鈥淚 am looking forward to any opportunities working in Brisbane or the Gold Coast as a start for a new adventure!鈥
When it comes to words of advice for other international students, Alistair recommends taking the leap of faith.
鈥淢ake the first move and start the journey with a blank canvas. The 海角射区 will always give you a hand, making the journey fruitful and granting you the opportunity to strive for a better tomorrow!鈥
